Four Benefits of Language Learning Through Theatre

In this third post in a series of three promotional posts, Marion Geoffray of Theatre Sans Accents tells us about the benefits of learning languages through theatre in their upcoming language learning workshops.. Theatre Sans Accents is an Edinburgh group which tries to break cultural and language barriers through the power of theatre.

Learning a second (or third) language has a load of benefits, including improving multitasking, memory and decision making skills. But, classroom-based learning is not the only way to learn. At Theatre Sans Accents we offer a great way to get hands-on experience in speaking a language. Our workshops give you experience language learning through the medium of theatre.

Confidence To Speak Around Natives

Whether you live in a foreign country or are travelling abroad, speaking a local dialect can be daunting and quickly discouraging. Shakespeare once famously said “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” This is especially relevant when it comes to language learning and speaking a foreign tongue.

Our theatre-based workshops will show you that speaking a foreign language is a form of “acting in society” and that you will play your part in it, just like the rest of us. Don’t be shy and be ready to shine…Action!

Ability to think on your feet and adapt quickly to changing situations is a valuable skill for language learners. Through role-playing and improvisation, you will gain experience speaking a foreign language in a range of concrete situations and social behaviours. The workshops let you practice the foreign tongue in a safe yet realistic environment. They help you to develop patterns that you’ll be able to reproduce with confidence when speaking off-stage .

Elocution, pronunciation and accents. Acting methods are packed with playful games which explore sounds, rhythm and intonations. From tongue-twisters to gibberish, you will explore in-depth what language is about and what lies beneath unknown words and foreign voices.

Fun Learning

The workshops allow you share experiences in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There’s no pressure to pass a test at the end! We promote cross-cultural exchanges and strongly encourage individuals from all horizons to join us. By sharing your perspective on languages, you will learn from one another and create tight bonds, beyond the frontiers of what you thought you were capable of.

Would You Like to Learn Language Through Theatre?…

Theatre as a method of language learning is a relatively recent discipline, although academics have been researching it for the past thirty years. At Theatre Sans Accents, we believe that both the creative and linguistic processes can be mutually beneficial to language learners and provide fast and effective results.

Language in all its forms is the essence of Theatre. French dramatist Antonin Artaud talked about “breaking through language to re-create theatre”. At Theatre Sans Accents, we aim to achieve this reunification.

With a strong educational emphasis, we produce workshops with both children and adults in mind. People coming from all horizons can enjoy our workshops; anyone who wishes to learn a foreign language in a practical and non academic environment. We specialise in English and French as second languages, and speakers of all levels are welcome: complete beginners, intermediate and advanced.

By using various acting techniques (e.g. focusing on body language, elocution, emotions through improvisation, characterisation work), we encourage individuals to experience the language in concrete situations, building up communication abilities and confidence in a safe and relaxed environment.

We offer collaborative and diverting hands-on sessions to experience foreign languages without the pressure of the classroom. We help our participants to boost their motivation and improve inter-cultural and social competences.
