Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival

After the exit of the first edition, the Festival aims to establish itself as a reference of Spanish culture in Scotland

The second edition of the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival arrives to the Scottish capital from the 2nd to the 10th of October showcasing 11 films, 5 documentaries and 5 shorts at the Filmhouse and the University of Edinburgh. This year, the Festival will be opened by documentary Sinsombrero by Tania Ballo followed by screenwriter Elvira Lindo’s comedy The Unexpected Life. A party at the Traverse Bar will close the opening day.

This second year is decisive for the Festival as it aims to establish itself as a reference of Spanish culture and language in Scotland. The organisers hope that the Festival becomes a platform for the interchange of ideas in the cinema industry.

Among the movies selected for this second edition there is some of social character with reference to the economic crisis that hit Spain in 2008; others like the documentary 25 Years After look at the most recent past, paying tribute to the Catalan post-Civil War Poet Jaime Gil de Biedma. There is one day dedicated to Basque cinema with the screening of Loreak, which was shortlisted for the foreign language Oscar, and 80 Days directed by basque filmaker José Mari Goenaga.

The University of Edinburgh will be hosting three special events. On Thusday 8th the ESFF has organised an evening dedicated to food. After the screening of Snacks, bocados de una revolución, attendees will be able to enjoy a selection of the best Spanish tapas and wine. The film, directed by Cristina Jolonch and Verónica Escuer reviews the trajectory of the Spanish gastronomy.

Different personalities from the academy field will take part in this cultural initiative, including Professor Nuria Capdevilla from the University of Exeter, and Dr. Antonio Sánchez from the University of Stirling, among others.
